Before you book anything

  • Check the river. Water level decides which rafting trips run at all. Above four feet the outfitters stop renting boats; above ten, commercial trips stop entirely. Today's reading is here.

Common questions

What can you actually book in Ohiopyle?

Guided whitewater rafting on the Lower Yough for age 12 and up, gentler family rafting on the Middle Yough for age 5 and up, electric bike rental for the Great Allegheny Passage, and private tours to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. Everything else in the park, including the falls, the waterslides and the trails, is free.

How far ahead should you book?

Weeks, for anything on a summer Saturday or an autumn weekend. Morning rafting launches sell out first, and Fallingwater house tickets are gone well before the tours that drive you there.

Do you need to book rafting in advance?

On a weekday in May you can often walk up. On a July or Labor Day weekend you cannot. Book ahead and take an early launch: the river is quieter and you are not queueing at every rapid.
