Ohiopyle in October is the version of this place that locals would keep to themselves. The river is still running, the summer crowd has gone home, and the gorge turns in a way that the photographs on the internet consistently undersell.
The thing that makes an autumn weekend work is light, not distance. Everything worth seeing here is an overlook, and overlooks are entirely about which direction they face and when. Baughman Rock Vista at first light
Morning fog sits in the Youghiogheny gorge on cold October mornings and burns off from the top down. Baughman Rock looks straight into it. This is the single best hour of an Ohiopyle autumn weekend and there will be almost nobody there.
Tip: Three-minute walk from the parking area. Take gloves. The plateau is colder than town.

Cucumber Falls with color behind it
Autumn rain usually gives Cucumber Falls more water than late summer did, and the gorge around it turns early because it is sheltered and damp. Walk behind the falls and shoot back out through the water.
Tip: The steps are covered in wet leaves in October. They are slicker than they look.

Tharp Knob picnic area
Up on the plateau with a view and room to spread out. Bring lunch rather than queueing in town. October weekends are quiet but the town is small and the restaurants are smaller.
Tip: A minute from the car, which matters when it is ten degrees colder up here.

Ferncliff Peninsula in full color
The peninsula is mostly hardwood, so it turns hard and all at once. The flat loop takes under an hour and the river is loud beside you the whole way.
Tip: The rock ledges on the far side face west, good light from about three onward.

Kentuck Vista for the last light
A framed view of the gorge and Laurel Ridge through a gap in the trees, with benches and no walk at all. The sort of stop you can do in a coat with a coffee.
Tip: Zero-minute walk from the road, which is exactly what you want at the end of a cold day.

Great Allegheny Passage under the canopy
Riding the railbed in October is the best it is all year. Flat, shaded by turning trees the whole way, and the river never leaves your side. An hour out and back is enough.
Tip: The high bridge looks down the gorge and is the photograph of the weekend.

Ohiopyle Falls, then home
Autumn rain generally means more water over the falls than you would have seen in August. Two-minute walk, big payoff, good last stop before the drive.
Tip: The observation decks face the falls from three angles. The lowest one is the loudest.

If you want to raft in autumn
The Lower Yough runs into October and the color from the water is better than from any overlook. It is colder. Take the wetsuit if it is offered. See the outfitter comparison.
If color has not turned yet
Elevation does the work. The plateau overlooks, Baughman Rock, Kentuck Vista, Tharp Knob, turn before the gorge floor does, sometimes by a week or more.
If it rains all weekend
Waterfalls are better in rain. Cucumber Falls, Ohiopyle Falls and the Meadow Run cascades are all improved by it; the overlooks are the only thing you lose.

Color builds through October in the Laurel Highlands, with peak most often falling mid-to-late month. It varies by a week or more year to year and by elevation within the park. The plateau overlooks turn before the gorge floor does.
What is the best fall foliage viewpoint at Ohiopyle?
Baughman Rock Vista for the widest view down the Youghiogheny gorge, and it is at its best in the first hour of light when fog is still sitting in the valley. Kentuck Vista is the easiest: a framed view with benches and no walk at all. The high bridge on the Great Allegheny Passage is the best one you reach by bike.
Is Ohiopyle worth visiting in October?
It is arguably the best month of the year here. The river is still running, the summer crowds have gone, the waterfalls have more water than in late summer, and the gorge turns. The trade-off is cold mornings and shorter days.
